Measuring Tractor Access for Horticulture Work in Kenya

An access problem is easier to discover on a site sketch than after a tractor arrives. For horticulture work, the narrowest gate, a tight headland or a fixed irrigation installation can influence the practical equipment choice. Record the farm’s actual constraints before asking for a recommendation.

Sketch the complete route

Draw the route from the entrance to the working area and storage location. Mark gateways, buildings, fixed posts, trees, overhead structures and places where turning is restricted. Add measured dimensions where possible and clearly label estimates.

Include the intended implement in the discussion. Its working width, transport width and turning requirements may matter more than the tractor alone. A catalogue width should not be used as a guarantee that the combination can pass through every point on the route.

Collect a useful measurement pack

  • Gate openings measured at the narrowest usable point.
  • Row spacing and the space available at row ends.
  • Height restrictions, including any permanent overhead structures.
  • Photographs showing the approach and exit, not just the opening itself.
  • A list of surfaces or seasonal ground conditions needing site assessment.

Photograph a measuring reference where it helps, but keep private property details out of material intended for public sharing. For a supplier enquiry, label each image with the same location name used on the sketch.

Ask for a configuration check

Send the pack with the crop tasks, existing implements and proposed tractor variant. Request the relevant machine dimensions and qualified advice on the combination. Do not assume that an adjustment, alternative tyre or removed component is acceptable without manufacturer guidance.

If a dimension is close to the available space, arrange an appropriate site assessment or demonstration before relying on it. The objective is a workable access plan with confirmed clearances, not a purchase decision based on a narrow numerical margin.
